Unconscious choices… – Part 3

Unconscious choices… – Part 3

When you choose one thing, you automatically don’t choose the other.

“And what can employees do about this? After all, we all have to do it together!” 🧠

That was the question I received after posting my piece yesterday.

I put the emphasis on the manager as the spider in the web.

It’s a valid question.

Because it’s as easy to point at the manager as it can seem difficult for each individual to contribute.

But don’t forget:

If you choose to do, change, or say something, you actively fight a negative work culture.

And that takes courage. 💪

Because you are part of the workplace machine.

🫥 Perhaps you feel you’re just one of many factors

🫣 A single cog among many

🙇‍♂️ Maybe you’re still quite junior, or you’ve only just joined the team

Maybe you feel insignificant. 🤏

And indeed, you’re just one of many.

If we accept that for a moment, I have a question for you:

‼️ How much damage can a single grain of sand do in a large machine? ‼️

Quite a lot, right?

Oops.

So what can you do?

💬 Take 30 seconds to ask someone how their weekend was

🤝 Check in with a colleague who’s still busy while you’re ahead of schedule

☕ Grab a coffee for colleagues in the back or at the reception

🙏 Take 10 seconds to show appreciation if someone does something for you, even for the simplest things.

👉 “Hey x, I really appreciate that you always do y/just did z. I don’t take that for granted!”

👉 Make sure you look them in the eye when you say it!

👏 Give compliments

👏 Give compliments

👏 GIVE EVEN MORE COMPLIMENTS!

If you choose to do this—whether you’re a manager or an employee—you are actively choosing AGAINST an impersonal, distant work culture. ✊

P.S.: Managers, if you’re reading this, you can use these tips too!
