“Sometimes you just have to say it like it is” – Part 3
But how do you do that under time pressure?
Let’s not kid ourselves:
A veterinary clinic is often a hectic place. 😵💫
🏃 Patients, clients, colleagues, and tasks are flying at you from all sides. 🏃♀️
Everyone is busy with their own tasks, wants, or needs.
Some are fun, others less so, or simply “musts” that need to be done.
And on top of that, things might not go according to plan…
Or not as agreed.
And then I also have to remember the “5 Cs” and say something like:
"Hey XX, I see things don’t seem to be going well with this patient. I’m taking over because I’m ultimately responsible and have ten more years of experience. This isn’t a judgment on what you did or how you did it. You do 99% of your work excellently, and I want you to trust that I’m really happy to have you as my colleague. If you take over my consults for the time being, we can get back to our original plan later. And if you want to talk about this afterward, I’d be happy to.”
Sounds like a utopia? 🌈
I agree.
Especially when you have a crashing patient right in front of you, with multiple sets of hands helping every which way. 😬
So how can it be done?
By addressing the core issue and taking responsibility for a debrief later on: 👇
"Hey XX, I’m going to take over this patient right now. I don’t have time to explain, but know I’m not angry or anything like that. Please take over my consults, and I’ll talk to you about it at the end of the afternoon/morning.”
Better, right?
Doable? Definitely!
Would you like to know the ultimate step I often set up with the vet clinics I work with?
🕵 Code language 🥸
Pre-arranged codes for a set of phrases to make your intention super clear.
“Hey XX, codeword Banana. Could you take over my consults? I promise I’ll get back to you later.”
A little bonus: add a wink or a smile.
Powerful, isn't it?
